BACKGROUND: Relevant wiki links – Agent Texas, Allison, Artificial Intelligence in Halo (the universe RvB is loosely based off of).

Texas is the artificial intelligence version of a ‘happy accident.’ Her creator, Dr. Leonard L. Church, was given leadership of an experimental military program and allowed the use of one full AI. The AI (designated Alpha) was created off of a full scan of Dr. Church’s brain, including everything that made him tick. From that scan, the memories of his long-deceased wife, Allison, were so prominent that another AI (designated Beta and codenamed Texas to fit with the Project’s naming scheme for agents) was made in the process off of his memories and feelings of this woman. From the outset, this creates complications in terms of what Texas is based off of. Given the elusive nature of memories and the time that had passed, Dr. Church’s memories of his wife would be incomplete, imperfect, and altered by decades of mourning her passing.

While the memories of Allison played a central role in the Texas’ creation, little is known about the woman herself. She was wife to Dr. Church, mother of Agent Carolina, and a soldier that likely served in the still on-going Human Covenant War (an intergalactic conflict spanning over decades involving humanity against an alliance of several alien races bent on wiping out sentient life). Her death appears to have taken place decades prior to the start of Dr. Church’s work in Project Freelancer and likely occurred during this conflict.

Ongoing during the Project and unknown to Texas until much later, the Alpha AI faced extensive torture. This was done with the purpose of breaking and splintering off the larger AI into smaller, usable fragments that could be paired up with Project Freelancer’s soldiers. The fragments would embody the various emotions and memories Alpha shed in the process of his torture. They were given Greek letter designations like Alpha and Beta’s and assigned to Freelancer agents as partners.

Unlike the Alpha AI, Texas involvement in the project put her out in the field with the other agents. In order to conceal her status as an AI from the other agents, she was given a robotic body that resembled a soldier in full power armor. She was assigned the AI fragment Omega, an embodiment of Alpha’s rage for what was done to him. For much of the time the Project was operating her involvement was kept out of sight until Dr. Church wanted to test her full capabilities. She was sent out onto the training floor against three other agents to run through various combat exercises. After their overwhelming defeat, the leaderboard that Project Freelancer utilized to rank agent’s capabilities updated her to the top position. This launches her rivalry with Agent Carolina as Texas ousts the woman from the number one position.

Throughout the rest of the Project’s prime, Texas was placed within missions without the knowledge of her fellow agents to ensure their completion. These often placed the agents up against the human rebellion and on one such mission, Texas and Carolina are sent after another agent that went AWOL, Connecticut. The two butted heads over the fate of Connecticut and Texas’ killed the rogue agent outright to complete their mission. It isn’t until after that Texas learns the real reason for Connecticut’s leaving. Not only was the woman part of the rebellion forces, but she had done extensive digging within the Project’s systems and left her dog tags containing the information in Texas’ locker. The files detailed the exact nature of Texas’ creation, the torture that has been happening with the Alpha AI in order to force it to splinter off into the smaller, fragmented AIs, and information on each of the fragments.

Texas goes AWOL herself only to return later in a break-in attempt to rescue the Alpha AI. This was the beginning of the end for Project Freelancer as she caused a split amongst agents that remained loyal to Dr. Church’s goals and those that were beginning to doubt his methods and intentions. When she finally reaches her target, she finds the broken remains of the Alpha who only wants to remain where he is to rest. She doesn’t have much time to do anything else with Alpha before the ship crashed and she has to abandon her objective.

Flash forward to some indeterminate time later to a boxed canyon in the middle of nowhere. Tex appeared to be operating as a mercenary still loosely tied back to what remained of Project Freelancer and retained possession of her AI fragment, Omega. During this time, Alpha had been given his own body and had somewhat pieced his broken self together by forgetting all the terrible things that have happened to him and the fact that he’s even an AI. To preserve the little bit of sanity he had left, he thought of himself as Leonard Church. He believed he was a perfectly normal human soldier that was part of the Blue Army stationed in Blood Gulch, tasked to fight the assholes in the Red Army on the other side of the canyon. That was, until he was blown up by his own teammates’ inability to operate a tank and he returned as a “ghost” that could conveniently possess/control robot bodies.

It wasn’t until Church had “died” that Tex was hired to take his place on Blue Team. She, too, wound up “killed” by a lucky grenade throw and she let Church believe that she was another ghost haunting the canyon. Prior to death, her AI-companion Omega jumped ship to someone else on Blue Team. Thus begun many years of conflict between Tex and the Omega AI with the Reds and Blues hauled into it. The AI fragment spent his time causing trouble for the Reds and Blues, even after he had hopped into the body of a pacifist medic, while Tex would attempt to hunt down her former partner to kill it.

This culminated in a showdown within the canyon where Omega managed to come up with an enticing scheme to end the war against the aliens by way of enslaving them. Tex agreed to help him on the condition that he let the others in the canyon go without a fight. They partnered up and hijacked a spaceship to escape the area. The flight didn’t last long as a bomb that was planted aboard by Red Team caused them to crash land.

During her time in the canyon, Agent Maine had been operating outside the project, under the alias Meta, with his AI partner Sigma. The AI possessed a drive to reach a human-like state and to find the Alpha. The AI drove his agent to assault other Freelancers to obtain their AI fragments and equipment. The drain of sharing his mind with multiple AI fragments and the power required to run multiple armor enhancements took its toll on the agent. The end result was a primal man driven by a need for power that was far unlike the original Maine. The pelican crash brought Texas and Omega in the path of the Meta and they were collected by him at the site. She spent the rest of her existence with the Meta as he tracks down other agents of Project Freelancers for their equipment. When the Meta reached his goal of finally finding the Alpha, an EMP was set off by Agent Washington that wiped out Texas, Alpha/Church, and the other AI fragments harbored by the Meta.

PERSONALITY: Above all else, Tex is a soldier with all the good and bad that come with it. She was a happy accident of an AI that came to be heavily involved and central to an experimental military project. On top of this, her initial set of memories and personalities stem from a former soldier that died in the line of duty. This combined with her environment fostered a drive to ensure that no matter the cost, the war between the human and alien races needed to come to an end. This drive has had her put her own safety at risk as the objective takes priority even if it’s wrapped up in a hare-brained scheme. Any attempt is better than none and if presented with an opportunity to make turn the tides in their favor, she will rush like a bat out of hell to take it.

While in this military project, she is shown to be competitive and desires to be the best she can be, but refuses to be dragged down into petty rivalries unless actively provoked. Missions took priority over forming friendships, although she respected those she worked with until given reason otherwise. The soldiers she worked with in this project were much closer to her caliber than those she fell in with later and she attempted to foster professional relationships during her limited interactions with the others.

She’s shown to be willing to work within the confines of this project as it operates in the name of ending the war until she discovers the dark, underbelly of secrets being kept from all those within the program. Her moral compass is skewed in many respects, but once the negatives outweighed the positives, she strove to bring the entire program down as it no longer was achieving its goals and became harmful to those she considered incredibly close to her.

Once the project came into decline after she led an assault on it, she landed herself with a team of faux-soldiers. Here she adopted the career of mercenary as they were far from the actual war and she was assigned to help the Blue Team of misfits. True to her new status as a mercenary, her greed shines through fully and she often looks for opportunities to earn money or artifacts. She has no qualms with violence or killing and knows the value of her combat abilities when the right people are asking. While many would consider her work questionable, she doesn’t and openly admits that she enjoys what she does and that this is an important factor in employment. In both soldiering and mercenary work, she will go forth into an assignment of ordered or paid to do so without any hesitation if she sees it as worth her while.

In contrast to her earlier work among peers of similar abilities, she takes on a more hard line and seemingly cold approach towards incompetents. Dry sarcasm becomes her default tone when talking with those she sees as incapable. Despite this and her penchant for vanishing for long periods of time without warning, those same incompetents often become the very ones she seeks to protect and watch over in her own way. Regardless of any insults she may throw towards these individuals, if she feels attached to them she would gladly pummel anyone that dared to threaten them as she is protective of those she considers her own. Her brand of affection could easily be summed as tough love and it may take one a while to worm their way beneath her rough exterior into the caring center that does exist beneath. One way her affection manifests itself is through jealousy and she is unafraid to confront those she feels may be “stealing” away those she cares about.

This can be seen to the extreme when it comes to the Alpha/Church. Not only are the two intertwined in the way they were created and the confusing memories they share, but protecting him comes in at a high priority right below taking any chance she can to win the war. Their relationship can be described best as on-again-off-again dating where she demonstrates her ability to care by arguing, randomly vanishing, and often times lying in order to preserve what little sanity Church has left. Deep down, she cares and if any threats were made to Church (affectionately nicknamed ‘asshole,’ ‘idiot,’ and ‘cockbite’), she would hit them like a hurricane without hesitation (unless he really, really deserved it). In much of canon her ‘affection’ for him comes across as distant and at times insulting, but she always reappears when needed to, and is willing to bend her hard fast rules of wanting payment in exchange for her assistance if he or even the rest of Blue Team needs it.

Tex is sarcastic, aggressive in many ways, and prefers to keep her emotions under wrap in most instances. It takes time for her to form attachments and bond with people, but once she does she is protective and will go up to bat for them even if she takes the roundabout way to make it appear as if she doesn’t really care.

POWER: Android body/armor + Active Camouflage + Groin-shot Targeting

Android body + armor: Tex will be arriving in an android body that appears for all intents and purposes to be human, but without the messy biological functions. Encasing this body will be black MJOLNIR armor. This armor comes equipped with what any good, futuristic soldier would need to survive in the field of duty including megaphones, a heads-up display load out of her gear/ammo and vital environment information, biolife scanners, radio communication, motion trackers, temperature regulation, and shielding (this depletes after so many shots/so much damage before it needs to recharge). With her armor and retaining of an artificial body, she will be able to utilize her processing capabilities as an AI primarily in the realm of combat (i.e. calculating shooting, scenario outcomes, trajectories, etc. in bullet-time).

Active Camouflage: Part of her armor is an enhancement that allows her to turn invisible. Due to the nature of this technology, she is able to appear invisible regardless of her surroundings, but only so long as she is wearing her armor and it is sufficiently powered/undamaged.

Groin-shot Targeting: Any time she gets into a fight, her programming auto-locks onto her opponent’s groin for her first blow. The lock ensures that she won’t miss even if she has to crash through the battleground to achieve it.

[ The recording starts and it’s clear the person on the other end is less than pleased. In fact, she’s containing the amount of anger she wants to unleash. She’ll save that for those she runs into in person or the first person to tick her off. ]

Is this some kind of joke? I don’t have time to be dealing with-- [ And she interrupts herself because well technically she does have time now that she’s here, oddly enough. She’s not sure if that’s better or worse than her last predicament. ]

Look, this is Freelancer Texas and I need a status report and location on all other agents operating in this area ASAP. And Wash, if you’re out there, save yourself the trouble because I will find you. [ Someone’s a little salty about the last thing they remember. ]

To whoever wrote that little brochure and hauled us all here? If you want my help, we’re going to need to start talking numbers. Real ones, none of this promise for the future crap. I do my job well and I don’t come cheap.
